Lady Gaga - Born This Way
When Lady Gaga was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton. And, she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit.
It’s no wonder that little girl from a good Italian New York family, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady Gaga.
“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady Gaga, 23, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where Gaga – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits -- would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange.
“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says Gaga, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”
That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: Gaga is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady Gaga has earned the right to reach for the sky.
“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says Gaga, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/KonLive/Interscope). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.”
On The Fame, it’s as if Gaga took two parts dance-pop, one part electro-pop, and one part rock with a splash of disco and burlesque and generously poured it into the figurative martini glasses of the world in an effort to get everyone drunk with her Fame. “The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”
The CD’s opener and first single, “Just Dance,” gets the dance floor rocking with it’s “fun, L.A., celebratory vibe.” As for the equally catchy, “Boys Boys Boys,” Gaga doesn’t mind wearing her influences on her sleeve. “I wanted to write the female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls,’ but with my own twist. I wanted to write a pop song that rockers would like.”
“Beautiful Dirty Rich” sums up her time of self-discovery, living in the Lower East Side and dabbling in drugs and the party scene. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says Gaga. “Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.” On first listen, “Paparazzi” might come off as a love song to cameras, and in all honestly, Gaga jokes “on one level it IS about wooing the paparazzi and wanting fame. But, it’s not to be taken completely seriously. It’s about everyone’s obsession with that idea. But, it’s also about wanting a guy to love you and the struggle of whether you can have success or love or both.”
Gaga shows her passion for love songs on such softer tracks as the Queen-influenced “Brown Eyes” and the sweet kiss-off break-up song “Nothing I can Say (eh eh).” “‘Brown Eyes’ is the most vulnerable song on the album,” she explains. “‘Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.”
For the new tour for this album, fans will be treated to a more polished version of what they saw (and loved) at her critically acclaimed Lollapalooza show in August 2007 and Winter Music Conference performance in March 2008. “This new show is the couture version of my handmade downtown performance of the past few years. It’s more fine-tuned, but some of my favorite elements to my past shows – the disco balls, hot pants, sequin, and stilettos – will still be there. Just more fierce and more of a conceptual show with a vision for pop performance art.”
It’s been a while since a new pop artist has made her way in the music industry the old-fashioned/grass roots way by paying her dues with seedy club gigs and self-promotion. This is one rising pop star who hasn’t been plucked from a model casting call, born into a famous family, won a reality TV singing contest, or emerged from a teen cable TV sitcom. “I did this the way you are supposed to. I played every club in New York City and I bombed in every club and then killed it in every club and I found myself as an artist. I learned how to survive as an artist, get real, and how to fail and then figure out who I was as singer and performer. And, I worked hard.”
Gaga adds with a wink in her eye, “And, now, I’m just trying to change the world one sequin at a time.”

Sociedad Tabú - Pantallas (Video Clip Oficial)
De ti
Pantallas
.. ...... .. Toque Profundo, sometimes referred to as Toque, or TP, is a rock group from the Dominican Republic, the most successful of the local Dominican bands to date in the late 80s and 90s. Most of the songs were related to their native country, and some songs, like "El Jevito" and "Mi País", involved social criticism and issues within Dominican culture.

It all started in 1989 when Toque Profundo participated in the popular event "Las Olimpiadas del Rock" (English: Rock Olympics). The original lineup was: Tony Almont (vocals), Leo Susana (guitars), Osvaldo Peña (bass), Lorenzo Zayas-Bazan (keyboards) and Maximo Gomez (drums). They were the best out of 15 participating bands in the event, edging out favorites "Arcangel" by a very small margin in a legendary duel. The band slowly gained experience and acceptance from the small Dominican rock listeners in Santo Domingo.
In 1992 they released the 1st independent album named "Sueños y Pesadillas Del 3er Mundo" (Dreams and Nightmares of The 3rd World). This was the first CD ever at that time to be released independently by their own financial means.
The CD immediately became a classic and best seller in Dominican rock history. Songs like "El Bolero Del Biónico", "Amigo", and "Mandela" were hits on local Dominican radio stations shortly after the album’s release.
That same year they were nominated as "Best Rock Group" in the Cassandra Awards, a similar Dominican version of the Grammy Awards. They also were involved in the international event "Rock Sobre Las Piedras" which took place at Altos de Chavón.
Towards 1993 the young group was chosen by Dominicans to represent them in the international event "Festival De Benidorm" in Spain with the song "Dios Salve Al Viajero"(God Save The Traveler). In 1996 they released their 2nd independent album named "Moneda" (Spanish for ‘coins’, also refers to money). Bigger success resulted from this second album. Songs Like "Llorar", the long-awaited "Dios Salve Al Viajero" and "Ramona"(a playful take on Eric Clapton’s classic unplugged rendition of “Layla”), all became top #1 hits on radio. This album is considered a classic within Dominican rock culture and, at the same time, sparked the “local rock bands” evolution.
In 1999 they released The 3rd Album "Cría Cuervos" (sort of like “Breed Crows”), which became their most successful album of their career at that date. Tracks like "Botas Negras", "Liberate", and "Noche Sin Luna" also became top #1 singles. "Noche Sin Luna" later became the longest-enduring song to remain in the top #1 list on Dominican radio. "Cría Cuervos", like the two preceding albums, was an independent album showing the musical growth of the band and their ever-growing fan base in their native country and in Latin America.
Further recordings led up to the release of their 4th album, titled "Magia", in 2002. International critical acclaim has often reputed it to be their best composed, best prepared album. This album was different from its predecessors in the fact that it expanded the musical aspect and explored the band’s maturity and potential to compose and record music. Influences from other cultures were included in this recording, which gave it the best rating among the four albums of their career. This album throws in dashes of punk, afro, alternative, and guitar-based fusions, completely breaking all barriers established on previously released albums. The singles "El Viaje" and "Angel Ciego" also manage to climb the top position on radio stations in the country for several weeks.
Current TimesIn mid 2003, rumors of possible disbanding of Toque Profundo were rampant but never became official. Due to the Dominican Republic's critical economic situation TP was forced to cease concerts, and each member found themselves trying to find ways to expand their musical horizons. Around this time some members formed several project bands, and guitarist Clemente Portillo left the country to the United States to promote TP's work in New York City These efforts included a showcase in Sirius Satellite Radio, an interview in Music Choice, and several concerts in upper Manhattan.
After that mini-tour, the band ceased to be the powerhouse rock band it once was, never releasing a new track and only playing their old material. Band members started their personal projects and only play together to sell the nostalgics of better times in Dominican rock history. The band is supposedly on a long hiatus, although it's not officially clear as to whether or not the band is declared defunct.
In December 2009, Toque Profundo celebrated their 20th year anniversary in Hard Rock Cafe Santo Domingo and a few weeks leter released a new single named "El Experimento" which quickly climbed up the charts of Dominican rock stations. El Experimento marked their first release of material after the last album Magia. Concerts were held in Santo Domingo and also in New York City.

Born Alih Jey De Peña in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic twenty one years ago, this singer-songwriter, re-emerges in 2004 with her second studio album.
Alih Jey’s musical career began at the age of three in her native Dominican Republic when she toured with her family as part of the act La Familia Peña. As she grew into her teens, she ventured into TV where she co-hosted - alongside her older sister - the children’s show “Topi Topi de Fiesta. “ Even though she became a familiar face and ratings were good, Alih Jey knew her true calling was not in front of the cameras; rather it was behind a guitar, piano and microphone.
Alih Jey wrote her first song at the age of 14 as an answer to her high-school peers dealing with the fact that she was a TV star. Her father was so impressed that she continued writing; It’s Ok, the first single off of her debut album was the second song written. These songs, along with her devotion for music, and her parents’ faith in her talent, helped her get her big break when Jorge Taveras – an old family friend and famous producer in the DR - came to the Peña house one night looking for her sister and was greeted by Alih Jey, instead. Such was the impact on Taveras that two demo’s were made and sent to Universal Music Latin in Miami, where immediately she was signed.
Her family then packed up their belongings to move to Miami and pursue Alih Jey’s dream of becoming a recording artist. Her first album, Alih Jey, was received with much praise by critics and helped establish her as a driving force in the Latin music scene.
Alih Jey devoted her time to promote her album and then took a break to focus on school and life. During that time, she met Jodi Marr through Universal Music. It was this encounter that would proof fateful in the long run, as they began writing songs together, creating strong lyrics and beautiful melodies. Alih Jey was growing into a young, independent woman, and Jodi helped her channel all these emotions into new songs. So much was created that it gave them enough material to begin working on her second album.
Nowadays, Alih Jey is a force to be reckoned with, already composing songs for other artists.
As an artist, Alih Jey possesses a unique talent rarely found in our time; her incredible gift for songwriting and expressing her feelings in such an honest manner set her apart from her peers, and her overall capacity as a musician, dancer and performer make of Alih Jey one of a kind.
The Album
Two years after her official debut, Alih Jey is ready to launch her second work with Universal Music Latino. Influenced by The Pretenders and Blondie, the album is reminiscent of the classic rock era; evident in 10 of the 11 songs included. Even the two slow songs – Por Eso and Borrarte – have an early 80’s “power ballad” component to them, with powerful arrangements, deep, strong lyrics and heart-wrenching emotions.
The album was recorded in Miami with a live studio band and was produced by JMRS Productions, except for one song, produced by Randy Cantor. JMRS consists of Jodi Marr, Jon Merchant & Ritchie Supa, and is a relatively new group of young, up-and-coming producers, which Alih Jey was set on working with after she began writing with them on a few songs. As she describes it, Jodi and Jon helped her channel all the emotions into songs: “There is a lot of real feelings in those songs; things that really happened. They helped me pour my heart out into each one.” Alih Jey says this album is extra special to her because she was able to get involved in every step of the creative process, not only in the songwriting but also overseeing and contributing in the arrangements.
Each of the 11 songs - except for Mi Debilidad – was co-written by Alih Jey, thus, making it her most personal work to date. The album is a true portrayal of Alih Jey’s life during these past two years, reflecting the required ups-and-downs of a young woman coming to terms with life, love, career, personal relations and her own individuality. However, rather than focus on the negative, she masterfully turned every emotion into a positive anthem of hope, defiance and independence.
Muñequita Tuya – the first single - is the perfect example of this sentiment, rendering a strong message of independence and self-sufficiency to all young women. Other songs, such as Antes, Aquí Voy, and Tu Canción Feliz, with their upbeat rhythms, also depict these positive views, and although Por Eso and Borrarte (Poder No Es Querer) - probably the most personal song in the album – talk about broken hearts, there is till hope and optimism at the end. Te Lo Debo A Ti – a song originally written to a first love - became Alih Jey’s anthem to her parents and their relationship while Mi Debilidad – a song made famous by her father in the late 60’s – is Alih’s gift to her father.
Straying away from bubble-gum music, Alih Jey explores intense subject matters with songs like De Prisa, where a young couple is faced with the decision of letting go in pursue of their dreams. Vino En Tu Bar – the oldest song in the album, written by Alih Jey at the age of 16 – and Yo Lo Se deal with the hurt of unattainable love. The first is a passion-filled pop-ballad, full of intense metaphors and apparent obsession; the latter is a light-hearted look at a young couple playing with the possibility of a future, yet is afraid to take that step.
Unmistakably, each song is a true reflection of Alih Jey as an artist and as a person. With this album she has marked her territory as a bona fide artist, composer, and interpreter, which is here to stay.

NineCircus Dominican Rock Band
NineCircus
bio,
started out as a cover band in the mid 90s. In 2002 we decided to create our own music and have been perfecting it for 5 years now. At first we really were not sure where we were going with this. In time we soon found out that what we were making was music that we actually liked to listen ourselves. We are very proud to have created a sound of our own, and lyrics that speak from the heart. Our songs speak of our experiences as well as those of others others around us: Love and Hate, Deception and truth, SEX, Happiness and Sorrow, Hope and Dispair. We hope to be able to share our music with as many of you as possible. The band is from San Domingo in the Dominican Republic and cite bands like Creed, Matchbox 20 and Pearl Jam as their major influences. Lead vocalist Eliseo Alba certainly has that exact gritty vocal style and in Don’t Sell Out they have penned a swaggering ballade with all the anthemic trimmings that you’d expect from such a pedigree. They also manage to pull the sound off immaculately, delivering an upfront and powerful track that will swell the hearts of rock ballade fans with passion. " Powerfully produced Radio rock with a melodic punch" - Matchbox Radio 24.

This style of music was new and revolutionary for Dominican Republic... .. Anyway, these Latin Rockers decided to attempt their luck, leaving old protest songs behind, and created a new scene for sensuality and metaphor... .. From this major change came their first hit single “Súcubos” which has generated a steady buzz in the Dominican rock scene. Acceptance was such that they managed to air this song through local radio stations all over Santo Domingo... .. In 2004 they edit their first album, “Oxes” a compilation of well done arrangements, accurate vocals and interesting mixes. From this album four major hits topped the charts in rock radio stations in Santo Domingo: “S.A.D.O”, “Los Daños que Provocas”, “Máquina” and a remake of 1984.. Spanish band’s “La Unión” song “Lobo-Hombre en Paris”... .. 2005 was a year of many concerts, interviews and the release of their first video for the song “Los Daños que Provocas”... NUX decided to hit back the studio and start recording their second album. The result of 8 months of intense work was an album trying to explain the.. thin line that divides love from hate…“Equilibrio”... .. In November 2006 the band released “Equilibrio” with a concert in the Hard Rock Café Santo Domingo. As part of the show a new video was revealed for the song “Igual que Ayer”, and with great confidence the six members of the band harvested in one night the attention of a media thirsty for the unveiling of such well kept secret... .. After years of hard work, recognition finally pays of. In January 2007 NUX is the heaviest rock band ever to be nominated for “the most prestige award” in the Dominican Republic, the “Casandra Awards”... .... .. ..Spanish Bio.... .. .. .. Musica Rock Dominicana - La Historia
Dominican rock, (known as "Rock Dominicano" in Dominican Republic), is rock music created by Dominican groups and soloists. Originating in the 1980s with the start of Luis Dias band Transporte Urbano[1] , successful bands such as Tribu Del Sol, Toque Profundo and Tabu Tek began to emerge. Dominican rock is listened to by the youth of the Dominican Republic who have embraced the music, sometimes over merengue and bachata, two other very popular genres in the Dominican Republic, and most recently Puerto Rican reggaeton.
The styles of rock bands from the Dominican Republic differ greatly. Not only is there regular Spanish pop rock, there are also sub-genres such as alternative, punk, emo, and metal. Most songs are sung in Spanish, though some bands (like ALF, Mithril, NineCircus, and Mustache for instance) also sing in English.
DOMINICAN ROCK DOCUMENTRY PART 1
Although the rock scene stays local and rarely goes international, it is large within the Dominican Republic, especially in the nation's capital, Santo Domingo. Just few bands as 'JLS (Spain), Transporte Urbano (U.S.A & Cuba)Sister Madness (Canada), ALF (USA), Pericles (USA, Costa Rica), Dark Miracle (USA), Los Pérex (USA, Mexico, Puerto Rico) La Armada Roja (USA, Puerto Rico) and Santuario (Puerto Rico) have traveled to other countries to play. Many concerts are held in the indoor auditorium of the Domínico Americano, a local school. Bands of many different genres of Dominican rock play there. Some artists who have played there are "spam", González, Sociedad Tabú, Shido, TKR, Toque Profundo, Cronicas del Eco, and Nux. Within the punk scene, there are a few venues which are regularly used for concerts. One of the most popular venues is Donde L'Abuela, a house which is regularly volunteered for concerts, as well as a small bar called Stilo Club, where bands such as Los Pérex, La Reforma, La Armada Roja, Pericles, Shido and Mulligan have played.
The Premios Cassandra, an award ceremony, is held yearly. There have also been many successful music videos in production. The most popular and considered best video is "Suele Pasar" by La Siembra, directed by Tabare Blanchard, who also directed "Pa´ Que No Pienses" by Calor Urbano. Dominican rock videos are played on many local music channels, and are also played in some other South American countries.
